What we're reading in February 2008

Ever wonder what the folks who work at a mystery bookstore like to read? Well, here's your answer. Each month we ask everyone here to pick a book, current or older, that they truly enjoyed and are enthusiastic about. Of course, if you visited the store, we'd tell you directly what we like but for those of you who can't come see us, this is the next best thing. Our special thanks to Judi for pulling this feature together and to all the staff who contributed their picks.

Presented here are the picks for this month, an archive of earlier months is available from the menu at the left.

What is Mary Alice is reading

The Bootlegger's Daughter ($7.50) by Margaret Maron

Margaret Maron's debut mystery in the modern Southern series featuring Deborah Knott is simply gorgeous. Bootlegger's Daughter tells of the lawyer turned district court judge balancing the legacy of her large loving family with the role of a woman campaigning for justice in more ways than one. Yes, there are issues of racism and bigotry and the author faces them squarely without painting a mythical small Southern town seen through rose colored glasses. An elegant mystery. Harper Lee smiles... Deborah Knott is Scout all grown up. You can hear her voice in the beautiful prose that distinguishes Ms. Maron's writing. It’s one that stays on my all time favorites list.

What Judi is reading

Missing ($24) by Karin Alvtegen

An entertaining introduction to the work of an excellent Swedish author of thrillers, Karin Alvtegen, known as Sweden’s “Queen of Crime.” Sibylla Forsenstrom, daughter of well to do parents lives on the edge of society as a bag lady. By choice she has separated herself from all who know her and has become invisible. That is until an incident in The Grand Hotel focuses the spotlight on her. No longer invisible and hunted by the police as a serial killer, Sibylla draws on her inner strengths and emerges capable of unraveling the true cause of these murders with the help of 15 year old Patrik, who she meets when hiding in the attic of a secondary school. Can’t wait to read more of Karin Alvtegen.

What Richard is reading

The Faithful Spy ($9.99) by Alex Berenson

John Wells is a CIA agent who has spent years infiltrating al-Quada. Now he resurfaces with knowledge of a deadly plot but his bosses fear that his years undercover and his conversion to Islam makes him dangerously unreliable. The truth is that Wells himself is unsure of his own loyalties. An extraordinary, complex espionage thriller that is as thought provoking as it is satisfying. A deserving Edgar winner.
