What we're reading in June 2008

Ever wonder what the folks who work at a mystery bookstore like to read? Well, here's your answer. Each month we ask everyone here to pick a book, current or older, that they truly enjoyed and are enthusiastic about. Of course, if you visited the store, we'd tell you directly what we like but for those of you who can't come see us, this is the next best thing. Our special thanks to Judi for pulling this feature together and to all the staff who contributed their picks.

Presented here are the picks for this month, an archive of earlier months is available from the menu at the left.

What Richard is reading

A Welcome Grave ($6.99) by Michael Koryta

From his first Edgar-nominated novel, Tonight I Said Goodbye, Michael Koryta has shown great promise and A Welcome Grave, his third novel featuring Cleveland PI Lincoln Perry, fulfills in every way. Lincoln his called by his former fiancée to locate her stepson after her husband (his father) is murdered. Thing is, the murder victim was the guy who took his former girlfriend away from him. However reluctant Lincoln is, he still undertakes the job and finds himself in a mass of family secrets and painful history that bears on Lincoln’s own life. A consummate PI tale with all the requisite elements and a few unexpected ones as well.

Sweet Love ($24.95) by Sarah Strohmeyer

This amazing, wonderful book is Sarah's best book yet, and that is really saying something. Its funny, and touching, and true. It tells the story of a mother who is determined to fix the mistake that cost her daughter years of happiness, and the daughter, who learns to appreciate love of all kinds as she says good-bye to her mother. The characters, as always, are so clearly drawn that you feel as if they might walk in the room. And the fact that it involves desserts, is, I have to say it - the icing on the cake. If you don't laugh and cry, I'd be surprised. Do not miss this book - perfect not only for the beach, but for any time. And the perfect gift for a special woman in your life.

What else Kathy is reading

Bobbie Faye's (kinda, sorta, not exactly) Family Jewels ($13.95)
by Toni McGee Causey

How to describe Bobbie Faye? First off, she works at Ce Ce's Cajun Outfitter and Feng Shui Emporium, and she's the terror of Cajun country. And really, it's not Bobbie Faye's fault that she seems to leave explosions, dead bodies and general mayhem in her wake. It just works out that way. If you are looking for a fast, funny read with some outrageous characters and witty suspense, this is the summer book for you. Better yet, start with Bobbie Faye's Very, (Very Very, very) Bad Day - the first book in the series - along with the new one, and you'll have double the laughs.

What Judi is reading

Vita Nuovo ($24) by Magdalen Nabb

Couldn’t wait even a month to actually be in Florence before reading Magdalen Nabb’s last Marshall Guarnaccia mystery. A wonderful read as usual with great sense of place. Magdalen died last August and her very special talent will be greatly missed. If you haven’t yet read this series, do by all means. Her latest finds the Marshall called to a villa where a young mother has been found shot. Surrounded by family, with no known enemies, Guarnaccia is mystified why anyone would want to kill her. Further investigation turns up illegal immigrant workers but that is hardly unusual in present day Italy. So why would someone brutally shoot young Daniela?
