What we're reading in June 2012

Ever wonder what the folks who work at a mystery bookstore like to read? Well, here's your answer. Each month we ask everyone here to pick a book, current or older, that they truly enjoyed and are enthusiastic about. Of course, if you visited the store, we'd tell you directly what we like but for those of you who can't come see us, this is the next best thing. Our special thanks to Judi for pulling this feature together and to all the staff who contributed their picks.

Presented here are the picks for this month, an archive of earlier months is available from the menu at the left.

What Lynne is reading

The Angry Buddhist ($16) by Seth Greenland

The Angry Buddhist by Seth Greenland sports an eye-catching title, but the book itself surpasses the promise of its title. A satire of epic proportions, this trenchant critique of politics, finance and popular culture comes our way as the country gears up for the high campaign season.

Icelandic lawyer Thora Gudmundsdottir returns in a splendid third volume by Yrsa Sigurdardottir, Ashes to Dust The title is appropriate because the crime scene is a volcanic eruption from 1973 that buried an entire village. An archaeological expedition is uncovering some of the buildings and finds bodies in one of them.

Never Tell ($24.99) by Alafair Burke

The writer and tenured law professor Alafair Burke just gleams in the new Never Tell featuring NYPD Detective Ellie Hatcher on a case of suicide that gets very complicated. If I gave stars to a book it would be all of them to this masterpiece that so elegantly displays how the preponderance of evidence sometimes requires prioritizing in the name of justice. Parenting, private school stresses, drug testing, family and many late twists and turns mean you should start this one only if you have time to finish it. A winner.
