In bleak midwinter, the people of Shipcott are shocked by the murder of an elderly woman in her bed. As snow cuts off the village, local policeman Jonas Holly is torn between catching a brutal killer and protecting his vulnerable wife, Lucy. Soon Jonas is taunted by a series of increasingly sinister anonymous notes from someone who seems to know every move he makes.
Mystery Lovers Review:
Bauer’s first novel Blacklands was short listed for the CWA Debut Dagger award. I found her second novel, Darkside, equally remarkable. Local policeman, Jonas Holly’s small isolated village in under siege, first a paralyzed older woman is smothered in her bed. Then an elder woman suffering from dementia is found by Jonas drowned in a small stream. While tending for his wife who suffers from MS, he butts heads repeatedly with the abusive senior detective in charge of the murder investigations. Jonas is very close to all the victims having grown up in the same village. Some of his memories are very dark, thus the dark side title. I never saw the finale coming at all despite the warnings. An enjoyable psychological thriller. [JA]
