Dismas Hardy is in a bad place in this book: just going through the motions after the events in the previous The First Law but a case of a teenager accused of double murder, bungled by his junior associate, brings back his natural sense of justice as he goes above and beyond to defend the boy. A fine performance in this excellent series.
